The Watch Night Service at Greater Salem Baptist Church was a night of holy remembrance, powerful testimonies, and community revival. As members gathered on New Year’s Eve, the sanctuary was filled with anticipation and reverence. The service paid homage to the longstanding Black church tradition of Watch Night — a historic gathering rooted in the 1862 Freedom’s Eve, when enslaved people awaited the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Honoring this legacy, the service invited reflection on past deliverance and a renewed commitment to faith in the coming year.
The program featured spirited praise and worship, testimonies of God’s faithfulness in 2024, and spoken word pieces written by young adults in the congregation. The atmosphere shifted between joyful celebration and solemn dedication as Pastor Hill led the church in a “crossing over” prayer at midnight. Candles were lit throughout the sanctuary as members joined hands to declare blessings over 2025. It was a night that affirmed Greater Salem’s call to be both historically grounded and prophetically future-focused, bridging generations through worship and unity.
